Richard’s Camps offer the discerning traveler luxury tented camps in two different locations in the very heart of the Masai Mara. Designed with privacy, exclusivity as well as adventure in mind we ensure a warm and memorable safari.
The original ‘Richard’s Camp’, now called the Forest Camp, was built as the home of the Roberts family in 1980 in the Ol Choro Conservancy located in the North West Masai Mara. Richard grew up in the Mara from the age of three with his parents Willie and Sue and his sister Caro. In 2000, Richard took over the small family home along with his girlfriend, Liz Fusco and converted it into a secluded retreat for those wishing to experience the Masai Mara within an original tented environment.
Furnished in true African safari style, and featuring modern amenities, each individually decorated tent has either twin or double beds with extra beds available for families. Our solar system provides clean, silent power and ensures 24-hour light to all the tents. All of our 8 large and spacious custom designed tents feature an en-suite bathrooms with heated showers. Rarely has sleeping under canvas been made so comfortable!
Tucked away in a cool and shady forest, which is home to resident leopard as well the elusive Narina Trogon (a beautiful forest bird), the camp looks out onto the Mara plains. Big cats, giraffe and all other wildlife are regular visitors to the camp’s perimeter, while hippos graze the lawns by night. As the weather almost always permits, we eat all our meals outside under Kenyan skies, but for those rare rainy or chilly evenings, we dine inside, adjacent to our beautiful and cozy sitting room with its roaring log fire.
Solio Lodge is located on a private wildlife sanctuary, tucked in the valley between the lofty slopes of Mount Kenya and the peaks of the Aberdare Mountains, directly north of Nairobi. The Solio Reserve is internationally recognized as the most successful private rhino breeding reserve in Kenya and visitors will find that sightings of up to 40 rhinoceros at a time are not uncommon. The wildlife experience here is intense and exclusive with 19,000 acres of conservancy surrounded by 45,000 acres of ranch and just one lodge, Solio Lodge, in the middle of it.
At Solio Lodge we offer a wide range of activities including night and day game drives. You can also take a helicopter to nearby Mount Kenya and for a hilltop picnic breakfast, or go trout fishing in the Aberdare National Park. The houses are entirely secluded, which guarantees comfort and intimacy. All are hand-made and individually designed around various natural features. Each suite has its own private flush toilet and an open air en-suite bathroom with a bath. It also has its own patio.
The main lounge and a pool area have been hand crafted to blend with the indigenous gardens, landscaped to enhance the dramatic views. In the main lounge guests have at their disposal a fully stocked bar, a sitting room and a fireplace. If they wish, they can also make a bonfire outdoors in a specially prepared fire site.
Sarara is found within the lands of the Namunyak Wildlife Conversation Trust. An area of approximately 850,000 acres which lies folded around the southern corner of the fabled Mathews Mountain Range of northern Kenya. This is home of the proud Samburu tribes people, a group of semi-nomadic pastoralists who have long shown tolerance for the wildlife that co-exists alongside their cattle.
The conservation work carried out by the Namunyak Trust to date has been hugely successful. As a result of the severe ivory poaching crisis of the 70’s and early 80’s there were no recorded elephants remaining in the Mathews Ranges by 1985. Today, several thousand elephants are living and breeding peacefully in the southern Mathews Range area. Together with a variety of other wildlife species such as buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, African wild dog, greater and lesser kudu, gerenuk, reticulated giraffe, impala and dik dik.
One of the highlights of the Namunyak area must be a visit to the famous “Sarara” Singing Wells. Samburu warriors bring their cattle to these watering holes on a daily basis during the dry season. The warriors descend into the wells which can be up to 10 meters deep, form a human chain and chant traditional Samburu songs as they pass water up by hand for the cattle. This fascinating ritual goes on for several hours a day.
